Yesterday was a strange day

Yesterday was a strange day.

Two of those items where a lot in the news: there are warnings on the internet on how the iPhone is restrictedby DRM technologies and the GPLv3 is also very much debated because of the intellectual properties you waiver when you release software under the GPLv3.

I might have to switch to FreeBSD and forget the iPhone…

Eclipse and Subversion resources

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

I was getting annoyed by Eclipse telling me that there are duplicate resources. These messages arise from the use of SubVersion. I never found a way to remove these messages. Until now!

Window -> Preferences…, Java -> Compiler -> Building. Under “Output folder” add “.svn” to “Filtered Resources”

The value should already be: “*.launch” so you would end up with: “*.launch, .svn”.

Holiday to Arnemuiden

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

My wife and I took a brief holiday to Arnemuiden. A distant relative of ours asked us if we could ‘babysit’ for their kittens (5!) and their fish (3 huge koi). We said yes as we could not afford a nice holiday abroad this year.

The week we where in Arnemuiden the weather wasn’t that great. That single evening it was dry I took my camera to shoot some sundown pictures…
Veere 1
We also went biking to a small village called ‘Veere’ we I took a picture of this nice looking mill.
Butterfly
As I like taking pictures of butterflies we also went to a special butterfly garden…
Goes
We also went to see several other small towns in the vicinity… this picture was taken in ‘Goes’.
Windmill
Something we could not pass on was to see the storm deflector (translated from the Dutch name ‘Stormvloed keering’) where I took this picture one of the several wind mills…

This was our vacation in a nutshell.

Cowboy and Indian party

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

On the 9th of June Marco and me celebrated our birthdays. Marco just turned 30, I on the other hand turned 32 :(
Marco at the party
As you see in this picture: Marco was dressed as an Indian. I myself was dressed up as a Cowboy (with a gun, hat and a sheriff star; too bad there isn’t a picture of me).

Google talks

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

The “OSS Speaker Series” is a large series of talks I have been listening to on Google video.

A talk on Google Guice a very nice framework for dependency injection. I like the use of annotation to do the injection. No extensive XML like Spring does. And here is another one.

Designing good API also a very good talk. A lot of things will sound very simple and common but it is never bad to repeat a good lesson.

A talk on zero configuration, I love this technology. I always try to make my programs as simple as possible and to make sure that the administrator does not have to know the entire application.

Talks I still want to take a look at:
A talk on the new upcoming Java Module System (JSR 277).
A talk on cache miss equations, sounds interesting.
